Saarbrücken’s Schlossplatz is literally surrounded by art and culture. Over the course of recent years, four historical museums moved here with their collections covering history from the earliest times well into the 20th century. The former seat of the district administration (Kreisständehaus) in front of the castle houses the Museum of Pre- and Protohistory. Here, you can explore the earliest evidence of human life, dating back to the stone ages and the bronze and iron ages, through to the Roman Empire and well into the Middle Ages. A highlight of the collection is the famous tomb of the Celtic countess of Reinheim with all its golden burial offerings.The same building is also home to a branch of the Museum of the Saarland. Its Old Collection presents works of art from 16th to the 19th century. The exhibition contains portraits of princes and counts, landscapes and still-lifes. Among the artists represented are famous painters like Abraham Mignon, Joos II. de Momper and Johan Bouman. Furniture, coins and porcelain objects complete the collection...
