Close to Sankt Johanner Market Square stands the Basilica Sankt Johann, a Catholic church in the baroque style. Right above the entrance portal, its tower rises to the dome often found on churches built in this style. As they were subjects to a Protestant sovereign, for a long time the Catholic citizens of St Johann only had the small Catholic Johannes chapel at their disposal. But eventually, the growing Catholic community won the support of a most prestigious figure: the French King Louis XIV. As part of his Reunion campaign, the “Sun King“ granted the Catholic citizens of Saarbrücken the right to build a new church in 1680 and also provided financial support...
